Because the VOIP needs of small business vary so widely, and because providers are proposing such a variety of solutions, our list is not meant as a ranking. Close observers of the SMB VOIP space say it's too early to declare any market leaders.

GE VoIP Phone- General Electric SIP

Manufacturer Thomson Inc. plans to offer a General Electric-branded phone that will support Internet telephony, an indication that the technology is entering the mainstream.

The GE licensee, among the largest makers and distributors of phones, has agreed to work with voice-over-Internet protocol service provider SunRockets, the latter company said Friday. SunRockets, a privately held Vienna, Va., company, sells residential Internet phone service for a flat rate of $200 a year.

The agreement also includes exploring promotional activities for SunRockets' VoIP services. Financials details were not disclosed.

In a joint statement with SunRockets, Thomson indicated that the future of telephony lies with Internet-based technology. "This is the beginning of an exciting time in residential telephony where more features that improve consumers' lives will be facilitated by the emergence of IP telephony," said Tom Bratton, VP of sales and marketing for Thomson.

Businesses and consumers are moving toward Internet telephony as a cheaper form of communications than conventional telephone service. In entering the market with GE, Indianapolis-based Thomson is pushing VoIP toward the mainstream by introducing one of the world's best known brands.

The companies did not provide a timetable for shipping the new phones.

Indian developer Adiance Technologies has released an Alpha version of 1Videoconference, which it claims is one of the World's First open source web-based video conferencing solutions for Asterisk.

According to a statement from the company, it has succeeded in developing a solution to stream asterisk audio/video channels to a web browser, which could lead to advanced video solutions such as, IP TV, video conferencing, video contact center, remote surveillance, video kiosk and video PBX.
The 1VideoConference, available on Source forge, now allows web, audio/video phone, Skype, MSN and Yahoo users to participate in a multipoint video conference.

But it could also be used as a platform for video services like TV shows, photography shows, marketing events, network games, social community sites, video wiki, blogs and forums, video tutorials, video library and more, says the company.

Hardik Sanghvi President and CEO of Adiance said: "1videoConference is [a] true enabler of video/voice and data interactions among the web and phone users.

"Being open source, web-based and foot print free, video enabled and cost effective, 1videoConference, as I envision, will change the way people and businesses collaborate on day to day basis."
The solution relies on .NET 3.0 and Asterisk and has some advanced features such as the ability to switch from a fixed line internet connection to a voice only mobile connection mid-conference if the line goes down.

Some of the in-conference features include; audience poll, destop-sharing, co-browsing, whiteboard, weblink, remote monitoring and co-authoring, according to Adiance.

Snom and blue4S from 4S newcom

Snom Technology today announced its interoperability between snom phones and the forthcoming blue4S from 4S newcom. The blue4S is designed to turn the Mac mini into the world's "slickest" telephone, data, and video switching system, also known as a PBX (Private Branch Exchange). "snom's interoperability provides us with the opportunity to partner with companies like 4S newcom and reach an expanded customer base," said Michael Knieling, CFO and vice president of snom. "Mac users have a keen sense of technology, aesthetics, and security. Together snom and 4S newcom are able to reach the Mac users and provide them with an overall VoIP solution." The Mac mini is booted from an iPod shuffle that is engineered to host the complete system for use as an IP PBX. Once booted, the Mac mini serves up to 250 users and 30 parallel calls, as well as five snom300 VoIP phones.

The UAE is to lift a ban on Internet telephony or Voice over Intenet Protocol (VoIP) from December, government officials were quoted as saying.

The Gulf News said say the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) would publish VoIP rates during the Gitex expo this month.

Other Press reports earlier quoted TRA officials as saying that the ban would be lifted to allow du and etisalat to use the technology.
